STORY ARCHETYPES FINDERS THREATS ENDGAME
404Places
Story & Lore · The Index

Some places were never meant to be found.

The error codes were always there. On walls, in networks, at coordinates that shouldn't exist. You just didn't know how to read them. Until now.

Story
01 The Simulation

The world is rendered. The errors are real.

Everything you see is output. Streets, buildings, sky — all rendered by a system designed by someone we call The Creators. Their intentions are unknown.

They communicate openly — not in hidden messages, but in the error codes embedded in the fabric of reality itself.

The digital layer beneath the physical world
Every 404 NOT FOUND is a place that exists in their system but not in ours. Every 410 GONE marks something they removed.
02 The Backup Plan

No office. No budget. No official existence.

Eleven years ago, seven researchers independently reached the same conclusion: the error codes in the physical world were too consistent to be accidental. They found each other. They built a network.

They call themselves THE BACKUP PLAN. They know they might not win. But someone has to try.

04 Signal Types

Every error code is a different kind of door.

THE BACKUP PLAN has catalogued seven types of hidden locations. Each responds to a different error code — and requires a different approach to enter.

Data Node
404 NOT FOUND
Active collection point. The Creators harvest data here.
Cipher Vault
401 UNAUTHORIZED
Encrypted archive. They hid something here.
Echo Site
408 TIMEOUT
Looping signal. Something happened here — and keeps happening.
Terminal
500 INTERNAL
Physical installation. The Creators' own infrastructure.
Ghost Point
410 GONE
Deleted. Keeps coming back. Nobody knows why.
Partner Node
200 OK
Approved by The Creators. Open. Monitored.
Origin Point 000 ORIGIN
The first coordinates The Creators placed. Before the streets. One per city. Maximum clearance required.
Finders
03 Who We Are

You didn't join. You noticed.

THE BACKUP PLAN doesn't recruit. They watch for people who start asking the right questions — people who notice that the 404 on the subway wall has been there for 847 days.

Every Finder arrives through curiosity. Nobody is assigned. Nobody is trained. You just start looking, and at some point you can't stop.

CLR 0–1
Casual
Just started noticing. Collecting fragments. Learning to read the signals.
CLR 2–3
Active
Hunting vaults. Piecing together patterns. Starting to understand what the codes mean.
CLR MAX
Deep
Has seen Origin Points. Knows too much. Can't unknow it.
Threats
05 DejaVu Ghosts

The simulation's immune system. It has seen you before.

When a Finder opens The Index at a void, the rendering engine notices. It dispatches a response — not intelligent, not malicious, but automatic and relentless.

Every Finder who encounters one reports the same thing: an overwhelming sense that this has happened before.

They can delete your data. Your backpack. Your session. They cannot take your vault. What is extracted is safe. That is why extraction is everything.

Three known effects have been catalogued: Scan (you are being observed), Time Leak (they are draining your run timer), and Static Lock (your next access point is blocked). More may exist.

Endgame
06 The Three Questions

THE BACKUP PLAN is assembling a picture. Every fragment counts.

Every fragment a Finder extracts is a piece. When it's complete, they believe it will answer the questions that started all of this.

1 Why did The Creators build the simulation?
2 Why does it reset — and when is the next one?
3 Can a reset be stopped? And should it be?
READY?

Start finding what they hid.

The Index is opening in Gothenburg through a controlled beta. Every place on the map was put there for a reason. Go find out why.
